Stuck Records and Vicious Circles - 22nd April 2018

A client recently described her behaviour as being like a "stuck record" and that got me thinking.

What does that actually mean? Is there anything we can do about it? Might a stuck record be first cousin to a vicious circle?

What exactly IS a 'stuck' record?

If you've ever owned vinyl records and a record player you will know that sometimes, there can be problems with actually playing the record. Instead of hearing the track as intended, you get the same note, over and over again until you lift the stylus from the record and end your misery!

How does that analogy manifest in life?

The image of the stuck record is applied to life experience when someone finds themselves habitually reacting to certain types of life event in a way that is not in the least bit helpful. Often a way that is self-destructive. The person concerned knows in their mind they are acting this way, but like the stuck record they feel unable to behave any differently.

If you were listening to that stuck record, repeatedly hearing that same note, what would you do?

Would you just sit and listen? Or would you at least lift the stylus or switch off the record player?

Stuck records don't have to remain stuck!

I guess it's a case of whether you identify with the record itself, or with the person who owns the record?

If you can shift to behaving like the owner of the record, then you have a choice. The record has no choice! If you know you are in this situation the only way to break the pattern is to act differently at some point. Think about what you could do that would challenge the feeling of being 'stuck'. It doesn't have to be the complete solution to your situation, just one step away from it. That's what you can do, take one step that is different, then another, and another. Keep going and trust that just because you have been stuck doesn't mean you have to stay that way.

Whether you feel like a stuck record or in a vicious circle with your decluttering - I can help!

This kind of behaviour that keeps you stuck can be changed. Firstly you need to have the realisation that you can change. Secondly you have to be prepared to make that change and it might not feel exactly easy.

Having some support from me can help you stick to your new chosen path of behaviour. The one where you are NOT the record! I have a variety of different services on offer and if you book a free 30 minute consultation with me we can talk about what might work best for you.
