Decluttering as a form of self-care - 12th April 2019

Self-care is a bit of a buzz word right now. It's up there with Hygge and Mindfulness as being something we are all supposed to embrace for the sake of our own health. What about decluttering, though? Could that really be self-care also?

Many women of a certain age, including me, were reared to believe that spending time 'indulging' themselves was intrinsically wrong. A woman was supposed to put everyone else's needs before her own. No wonder so many women are exhausted and stressed!

What might you take up that would count as self-care? Mindfulness or meditation, perhaps? Having a nap when you feel tired instead of powering on into exhaustion? Doing more of what makes you feel alive? Getting out into nature? Treating yourself to a massage or beauty therapy? Spending time being creative? Yes, any or all of these would be great, plus a whole lot more, of course.

Would you add decluttering to that list?

I'm guessing that might be a "no!"

I wouldn't blame you for choosing a manicure over decluttering! When you think about decluttering you probably would expect to get stressed, tired, maybe a bit dirty even? How could any of that count as self-care?

Think about how you might have to work at doing your meditation, for example. Meditating isn't as easy as you might like, is it? Nonetheless, you might be inclined to stick at it because you know the benefits are well worth it and would definitely count as self-care.  The same goes for decluttering. Like Mindfulness you might find it challenging to get into doing it. However, time and time again I hear from clients how much better they feel as a result. Lighter, calmer, more relaxed, energised, etc, etc. Some even lose weight!

The more decluttering they do, the more they want to do! Some of them have become practically unstoppable. They are so fired up with enthusiasm for de-junking their lives. Don't forget, this is a holistic practice so they are not only making space in their homes, but also their heads.

Give it a go?

I think most people have a sense of whether or not they need to declutter. If you feel like this you need to ask yourself what stops you from taking action. I suspect it's the perceived unpleasantness of it all. The raking up of old emotions and memories, the judgement around money spent and considered wasted. Yes, it's all there in your clutter.

I want you to take a big leap of faith. I know that what is on the other side of your clutter will feel better than where you are right now. Stop dwelling on what might go wrong. Focus on what can go right!

If you want to feel calmer, lighter, more relaxed, and energised then you know what you need to do. I'm sure you will agree that whatever it takes to get there counts as self-care?

If you don't know where to start, please get in touch to find out how I can help you. I have a variety of different ways I can work with clients. Call me on 07850 580802 for more information.
