Start simple - declutter your sock drawer! - 27th May 2025
I'm often asked, "How should I start with decluttering when I'm anxious about doing it?"
The simple answer is to start SMALL. Focus on one small area where success is pretty much guaranteed.
Find out why your sock drawer is a very good place for you to start decluttering . . . . .
Your sock drawer is a relatively easy project for several reasons:
1. Socks come in pairs, therefore odd socks are of no use
2. Socks are no good if they have holes in them
3. Socks that are old and shapeless are not pleasant to wear
4. There will only be socks in your sock drawer - unless it's also the storage place for other items of underwear
5. You are unlikely to be emotionally attached to old socks
6. All the above mean there are no complex decisions to be made!
How to declutter your sock drawer - even if it contains other items of underwear!
1. Set aside an hour so you don't have to rush
2. Empty the drawer - see how much space you have!
3. Work through the socks checking for any with holes or other wear that means you won't use them - create a discard pile
4. Ensure all socks are in a pair - put odd socks to one side as you go, you might find their partner in the laundry basket?
5. If you find anything that is not sock or underwear related - put this aside but separate from the odd sock pile!
6. Look at the remaining items - do you wear them? Will you wear them? If not put on the discard pile - this also applies to other worn out items of underwear if this is where you store them
7. Return all paired wearable socks to the drawer along with other wearable underwear items if this is how your storage works
8. Declutter all the old unwearable socks!
9. Group together all odd socks and clip together using clothes peg. Wait until you have done a few loads of laundry before discarding them
10. Relocate any items from the drawer that really belong elsewhere
11. Return all the good socks and any good underwear to the empty drawer
12. Bask in the feeling of success!
One small success can lead to bigger things
Now you have your sock drawer neat and tidy and clutter-free you may well feel inspired to try another area. This is great but don't tackle any large areas just yet, keep it small for a while and build on this success.
